SHARE YOUR OPINION ON THE GREEN CART PROGRAM – ONLINE SURVEY AT SASKATOON.CA

The City of Saskatoon is asking for your opinion on potential changes to the optional Green Cart program to help us better understand the wants, needs and expectations of our residents. A short online survey is open until July 8 to interested residents who currently do not subscribe to the Green Cart program. Visit Saskatoon.ca/GreenCart for the survey link.

Current subscribers to the Green Cart program will be contacted by email or phone to complete a separate survey.

The City of Saskatoon continues to explore innovative waste management practices. Engaging with residents will help to ensure that the viewpoints and values of citizens are included in the City’s decision-making process.

Subscriptions for the optional 2015 Green Cart program were accepted until June 1. This year, approximately 5,700 households subscribed, an increase of 46% over 2014.

If you missed the June 1 deadline for the program, there are other ways to keep yard waste out of your black garbage cart. The City’s compost depots are open for residents to drop off their leaves, grass and non-elm branches and tree trimmings free of charge. For locations and hours, visit Saskatoon.ca/compostdepots. And for home composters, the City offers a $20 rebate to residents who purchase a compost bin from a Saskatoon retailer in 2015. Visit Saskatoon.ca/homecomposting for information.

For information on the optional Green Cart program, the Compost Depots and home composting, including a $20 rebate on the purchase of a new home compost bin, visit Saskatoon.ca/GreenCart.

Growth Plan to Half a Million North Park and City Park Community Consultation – 33rd Street Bridge

The City invites residents of North Park and City Park to attend a Growth Plan Community Consultation on Wednesday, June 17th, from 7 to 8:30 PM at North Park Wilson School (Gym). More details are noted in this poster.

UNIVERSITY BRIDGE REHABILITATION ENTERS SECOND PHASE

The first phase of the University Bridge rehabilitation project is almost complete. Construction crews are finalizing repairs on the south side of the bridge deck, and are now preparing to begin work on the north side.

“We’re happy with how the project is progressing,” says Rob Frank, Manager of Asset Preservation. “To this point we have encountered no major surprises and we’ve had great weather, which has kept the work moving along nicely. In saying that, rain or unforeseen issues can still set us back.”

The following work has been completed on the south side of the bridge:

· Removed asphalt surface and expansion joints

· Strengthened columns and deck

· Repaired deck and installed concrete overlay to strengthen deck and provide smooth driving surface

· Removed, repainted pedestrian hand rail (still to be reinstalled)

The pedestrian walkway will remain open on the north side of the bridge until the hand rails are complete on the south side.

Once traffic patterns settled after the closure, the City’s transportation engineers made some traffic signal adjustments to support easier movement around the city. Adjustments were made at the following locations: 1st Avenue from 20th to 24th Street, Idylwyld Drive from 20th to 25th Street, Warman Road and 33rd Street, and College Drive and Circle Drive West interchange ramp.

During the closure of University Bridge, the typical weekday traffic on the City’s other bridges has increased by an average of 8.6% or 6,234 vehicles. The City will continue to monitor traffic patterns as the project continues.

* The Broadway Bridge does not have an automatic traffic counter. We will be collecting some data later in June that will help provide a sense of the traffic shifted to Broadway Bridge.

“The impacts to traffic, while not insignificant, have been manageable and Saskatoon residents have displayed a great deal of patience and understanding around this project,” says Frank. “We would again like to thank drivers for their patience as this necessary work is carried out.”

The City is continuing to encourage drivers to reroute your commute, take the bus, walk or bike. For more information visit saskatoon.ca/universitybridge.

Street sweeping in City Park

The City sweepers are coming our way!

Please help by moving your vehicles on streets posted with street sweeping signs.  The bright yellow “No Parking” signs are delivered 2-3 days ahead, please check the date and move your vehicles by 7 AM to avoid a parking ticket.  You can park there again after 3 PM that day and the signs will be taken down the next morning.  If it rains or there is a change, the signs get updated for a new date.

Again this year, the areas around the schools are skipped during daytime neighbourhood sweeping for the safety of students.  Starting May 27, school zones will be posted with No Parking signs and vehicles will be ticketed and towed to a nearby street (new for this year).   Please watch for bright yellow signs in and around the 30km/hr school zone in your neighbourhood and have your vehicles moved out of this area from 8 PM to 6 AM.

Visit the City’s website for the full schedule and Street Sweeping service alerts, or take advantage of our new interactive map.

Thanks, and we’ll see you soon!

Gardeners Needed at North Park Wilson Elementary School

On Saturday, May 23 between 9 and 12 North Park Wilson School is hosting a garden cleanup morning.  Our natural grasslands garden offers a home for migrating monarchs, a safe space for traditional First Nations plants to grow and a place for our students to study native plants. Our plan for the morning is to tidy up old growth, remove invasive plants and make space for the placement of a large rock. Please join us as we work to renew and preserve this natural space for our community. Please contact the school (683-7380) if you have any questions about our natural grasslands garden.
